robin’s story
Robin was born in Birmingham in England in 1939. His father was a stamp collector but unfortunately lost his life in 1942 whilst serving in the North Atlantic Convoys. Robin inherited his late father’s modest collection and started collecting stamps as a child.
Robin graduated as a geologist at the Birmingham University and took up employment with the Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa. He was seconded to Williamson Diamonds Limited in Tanganyika as a field geologist and was later relocated to Kenya. After his marriage in 1967, he was transferred to the Anglo American Corporation and worked as a geologist at the Western Deep Levels gold mine in Carletonville. He moved to the Anglo American head office in Johannesburg in 1974. In 1977 he was transferred to the Coal Division where he remained until his retirement in 2000.
Robin became involved in organised philately in 1993 when he joined the Great Britain Philatelic scribe for the latter and produced the latter society’s newsletter until 2000 when he became chairman. In May 1995 he joined the Witwatersrand Philatelic Society as a home member . In 1996 he was appointed a committee member of the Wits Philatelic Society and held the position of Honorary Secretary from 1999 to 2004.
Robin served on our Editorial Board for many years, contributing with insight, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of our publication. His thoughtful guidance and editorial discernment shaped countless editions, leaving a mark that will endure for years to come.
We remember him not only for his editorial excellence, but for his kindness, generosity of spirit, and the calm integrity he brought to every philatelic discussion. His presence enriched our team, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the honour of working alongside him.
